How SACE results are worked out, the dates that matter, choosing subjects and planning the final months.
The SACE Board of South Australia sets the rules. Students need 200 credits, including the Personal Learning Plan, Stage 1 English and maths for literacy and numeracy, the Research Project, and at least 60 more credits of Stage 2 subjects. Compulsory subjects need a C grade or better.
Each Stage 2 subject gets a grade from A+ to E-, built from 70% school assessment, moderated by the SACE Board, and 30% external assessment. SATAC then scales Stage 2 results and builds the ATAR from the best 90 credits of results.
Each school sets its own assessment calendar for school assessment tasks, so ask for it early in the year. External assessments are set and marked by the SACE Board, and exams are sat at the same time across the state.
Start with what your child enjoys and does well, then check prerequisites for the university courses they are considering. Because 70% of each Stage 2 subject is school assessment, steady work across the year counts as much as exam skill.
Maths choices matter most, and the step from General to Methods is real. Specialist adds a second demanding subject on top. Trying real questions from each course with your child before choosing is a quicker and fairer test than picking on scaling alone.
Year 11 is a good time to fix gaps, while Stage 1 subjects and the Research Project build the habits Stage 2 needs. In Year 12, weekly lessons work best when they follow the school assessment calendar, so every task gets proper preparation.
Once most school assessment is done in Term 3, the focus shifts to past SACE exams, sat under timed conditions and marked against the published performance standards. Every lost mark is reworked, so the same mistake does not appear twice in the real exam.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own school work and assessment calendar. Lessons are 1-on-1, with one tutor per subject, and you receive a lesson report after every lesson, so you always know what was covered and what comes next.
