The vocabulary arrives fast. From Year 7, science turns into a new language: particles, cells, variables, forces. A student who misses one word early loses every explanation built on it. Practical reports then add a second skill, writing up a fair test, that many students are never walked through step by step.
What happens in lesson one?
Their current unit, explained back. The tutor opens the unit the class is on now, such as chemical change or the solar system, and asks the student to explain it in their own words. Where the explanation breaks down is where the lessons start. A written report with the gaps and the next steps lands in the parent app that evening.
When will we see a change?
Usually at the next unit test. School science runs in units, and each one ends in a topic test, a research task or a practical report. Weekly lessons through a unit give the ideas time to settle before that assessment. Confidence tends to come first: 98% of students report more confidence.

What does a science tutor cover in primary and high school?
Tutors follow the Australian Curriculum: Science and the student's own school program. It has four content strands, biological, chemical, earth and space, and physical sciences, plus science inquiry skills such as planning a fair test, recording data and drawing a conclusion.
In primary school that means living things, materials, forces, light, and the Earth and sky. In Years 7 to 10 it moves to cells and body systems, the particle model, chemical reactions, energy, genetics and motion, along with the practical reports and research tasks schools set.
Is online science tutoring effective?
Lessons are live and 1-on-1 on an interactive whiteboard, so the tutor can draw a cell, balance an equation or sketch a circuit while the student talks through their thinking. The student keeps the same tutor each week, and that tutor works from the unit the class is on.
Experiments stay at school. Tutoring is where students go back over what the experiment showed, how to write the method and results, and what the topic test will ask. 98% of students report more confidence.
