How school works in South Australia, from NAPLAN to the SACE, and when tutoring helps most.
The SACE is run by the SACE Board of South Australia. Students need 200 credits. Compulsory parts include a Stage 1 subject usually taken in Year 10, Stage 1 English and maths at a C grade or better, and at least 60 credits of Stage 2 subjects passed at C- or better.
Each Stage 2 subject is 70% school assessment and 30% external assessment, usually an exam or investigation. Grades run from A+ to E-. SATAC calculates the ATAR from a student’s best Stage 2 results, scaled so different subjects can be compared fairly.
SA schools run four terms. NAPLAN is sat in March in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and results are reported in four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. That gives a clear read on where your child sits against the national standard.
Students choose Stage 1 subjects in Year 10, and Stage 1 results guide what they take at Stage 2. Pick subjects your child can do well in, then check prerequisites for the university courses they are considering. Maths is the choice parents ask about most, and the levels below are the usual options.
Most families start when a subject begins to feel hard, rather than the week before a test. In primary school that is often reading, spelling or times tables. In high school it is usually Year 7, when algebra and essay writing arrive, or Year 10, before senior course choices.
In Year 12, school assessment is 70% of each subject, so the year is won task by task. Through Terms 1 to 3, lessons prepare for each assessment and work on the feedback that comes back. In Term 4, lessons move to past SACE exams under timed conditions.
Tutero matches your child, ages 5-18, with a 1-on-1 tutor who knows the SA curriculum and the SACE. Adelaide families keep the same tutor at the same time each week, lessons start from your child’s own school work, and you get a short report after every lesson. A qualified teacher is from A$75 an hour.
What students in South Australia learn at every year level, and how a tutor helps.
In South Australia the first school year is Reception. Students learn letter sounds, early reading and counting, then build spelling, sentences and place value by Year 2.
My favourite food is pumpkin soup because it warms me up on cold nights.
Practises sounds and number facts in short, regular sessions, so the basics become automatic.
Based on the ACARA Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0): English and Mathematics, Foundation to Year 2.
Years 3 to 6 build times tables, rounding, fractions and decimals, along with comprehension and planned writing. NAPLAN is sat in Years 3 and 5.
Round 4,682 to the nearest hundred.
Answer4,700
Finds the exact gap, often place value or times tables, and works on it every week.
Based on the ACARA Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0): Mathematics and English, Years 3 to 6.
Year 7 is the first year of high school in South Australia. Students move into algebra and ratios in maths, and analytical and persuasive writing in English. NAPLAN is sat in Year 7.
High school should start at 10 am. A tired student learns very little in first period, and a later start would fix that.
Helps your child settle into high school work, from setting out algebra to planning a paragraph.
Based on the ACARA Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0), Years 7 and 8.
Years 9 and 10 cover equations, trigonometry and essays on set texts. Many students start a compulsory Stage 1 SACE subject in Year 10, which counts toward the certificate.
Solve x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.
Answerx = 7, y = 3
Strengthens algebra and essay writing before Stage 1, and helps your child choose subjects with confidence.
Based on the ACARA Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0), Years 9 and 10; SACE Board of SA.
Stage 1 is usually studied in Year 11 and Stage 2 in Year 12. Each Stage 2 subject combines school assessment with an external exam or investigation.
Both texts admire resilience, but only one asks what it costs, and that question shapes everything its writer leaves unsaid.
Plans each assessment task with your child and practises external exam questions under time.
Based on the SACE Board of SA, SACE subject outlines and assessment.

My son's grade has gone from D to now B in Maths. If you are second-guessing, you won't regret it. Gabby is an amazing tutor. Give them a go & share the love with your friends and families who are finding it tough to help their child in never-ending exams & assignments.

Our tutor was beyond outstanding, She went over and above with her time and availability, the way she related with to my 16yo and motivated her was excellent. Thank you for your help, couldn't have asked for a better result.

They answered my enquiry on a weekend within half an hour which I did not expect. The others I contacted at the same time, replied the following week. My nephew is learning with Andy and the great plus about Andy is he finished high school a few years ago and is now at Uni. The price is much more affordable my nephew has improved so much considering he has slight autism. Tutero, Joey and his team have proven very caring and considerate. Thank you Tutero.

My daughter’s tutor Sera has honestly been amazing. The connection was instant and Sera is so supportive and understanding. To receive a phone call from my daughter at school so happy after her maths class that she understood what was being taught was definitely so great to receive. Thank you.

Not only was the process made really simple and engaging, but Tutero also provided me a personalised page where I can track my sessions, organise tutors in different subjects if need be and a record of the work I needed to follow up on. If you need a tutor, but don't want all the logistical stress involved with tracking one down, I strongly recommend Tutero!

Fantastic. My daughter has grown in confidence and prior going into her exam yesterday stated “I am going to miss my tutor”.Excellence service, individually tailored. We couldn’t have asked for more.

My daughter has been struggling at school. She has started using Tutero once a week and her whole outlook on school has changed. She is a slow learner and they have been great. She is now so happy wanting to learn. Thanks so much.

We had tutors for Chemistry and Maths Methods for our daughter in Grade 12. Both Luke and Francisco were fantastic and provided supportive assistance as well as increasing her confidence. I cannot thank them both enough.

My daughter has been having weekly sessions this term and the progress is definitely noticeable. Her tutor comes to each session prepared and provides amazing, honest feedback after each one. The communication is fantastic and we are very impressed overall. This has been the best solution for us as a busy family and I would definitely recommend our tutor to anyone who asks.

Out tutor was a breath of fresh air for our ASD son. He has task avoidance, so demands are incredibly hard for him.The tutor was patient, animated and empathetic towards my son.He engaged with her more than he does at school.I would highly recommend this service to anyone.
