Since 2022, Year 7 has been part of high school in South Australian public schools. That puts a new school and a faster pace all at once, right when maths turns abstract. A shaky Year 7 rarely fixes itself by Year 10, and algebra is one of the topics later SACE subjects lean on most.
Stage 1 is usually Year 11 and Stage 2 usually Year 12. Every Stage 2 maths subject is 70% school assessment and 30% an external exam, usually in November. Most of the grade is earned in tasks across the year, not on exam day.
Methods and Specialist exist only at Stage 2. If either is the goal for Year 12, Stage 1 Mathematics is the subject to take in Year 11.
The difference between an A and a C in Methods is often not talent but the work done across the year, and past questions practised under time.
