How maths tutoring works in Sydney

  1. We match your child with a tutor who knows the NSW syllabus and the HSC. The same tutor, at the same time, every week.

  2. Their tutor sets goals around your child and what they're learning in class, then reviews their progress and adjusts the program as they go.

  3. Weekly lessons after school or on weekends that follow what their class covers each term of the NSW school year, from NAPLAN to HSC assessment tasks.

  4. After every lesson you get a written report: what was covered, how it went and what comes next. So you always know where things stand.

“My son’s grades have gone up 30% since starting with Tutero 6 months ago. As he is shy in class, having 1:1 tutoring has helped him clarify a lot of core concepts and now he is much better equipped for HSC.”

A parent's guide to maths in Sydney, Kindergarten to HSC

What NSW parents ask most, from the Opportunity Class test to the HSC.

Get matched with a maths tutor
Chapter 01

How NSW maths is organised

Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) is where maths turns abstract, and Stage 5 splits students by how much of the harder Path content they take on.

  1. Year 4The Opportunity Class placement test
  2. Year 6The Selective High School Placement Test
  3. From Year 10The HSC minimum standard numeracy test
  4. October and November of Year 12HSC written exams
Chapter 02

Why Stage 5 decides so much

By the end of Year 10, the Path content a student has handled largely decides which HSC maths course is realistic. For some, Standard 2 reflects a Stage 5 gap that was never closed, and Years 9 and 10 are the last easy window to close it.

Chapter 03

HSC maths: Standard, Advanced or Extension?

The right choice is the hardest course your child can do well in. If quadratics and trigonometry felt secure in Year 10, Advanced is realistic.

Standard 1
Maths for work and daily life
Standard 2
Solid in Stage 5 core, but found the Path content hard
Advanced
Functions, calculus and probability
Extension 1
Taken alongside Advanced
Extension 2
The most demanding HSC maths
Chapter 04

What scaling does and does not tell you

The average scaled mark rises steeply from Standard to Extension 2, but that reflects the students in each course as much as the course itself. A student who would do well in Standard 2 and struggle in Advanced gains nothing by switching.

Questions about maths tutoring in Sydney

From A$65 an hour, the same rate from Kindergarten to the HSC. No contracts or sign-up fee, and you pay after each lesson. A qualified teacher is from A$75 an hour.

Yes. HSC students are matched with a tutor who knows their course, whether that is Standard, Advanced, Extension 1 or Extension 2, so lessons follow school assessment tasks, trials and the HSC exam.

For most students, yes. One steady hour with the same tutor keeps them on top of class work. HSC students sometimes add a lesson before trials.

Yes, as part of regular lessons. Strong classroom maths is the best preparation, and tutors add reasoning questions in the style of the tests.

How a tutor helps

Makes every line of working visible, so your child understands each step instead of memorising patterns.

Based on the NESA Mathematics K to 10 Syllabus, Stage 4.

Years 9 and 10

Stage 5 of the NESA Mathematics K to 10 syllabus combines core content for every student with Path content, such as surds and harder trigonometry, that prepares students for Mathematics Advanced.

Closes Stage 5 gaps while there is still time, so the HSC course is chosen on ability, not missed topics.

Based on the NESA Mathematics K to 10 Syllabus, Stage 5.
