How maths tutoring works in Melbourne

  1. We match your child with a tutor who knows the Victorian Curriculum and VCE. The same tutor, at the same time, every week.

  2. Their tutor sets goals around your child and what they're learning in class, then reviews their progress and adjusts the program as they go.

  3. Weekly lessons after school or on weekends that follow what their class covers each term of the Victorian school year, from NAPLAN to SACs.

  4. After every lesson you get a written report: what was covered, how it went and what comes next. So you always know where things stand.

A parent's guide to maths in Melbourne, Prep to VCE

Where the pressure points fall in Victorian maths, and the senior choices to think about before Year 10.

Get matched with a maths tutor
Chapter 01

One design from Prep to the VCE

The Victorian Curriculum and the VCE are written by the same body, so maths is one continuous line. A Year 9 struggle often began as a small Year 5 gap.

  1. Term 1NAPLAN in March for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9
  2. Term 2The first big VCE SACs
  3. Term 3Year 10 students plan their VCE subjects
  4. Term 4VCE exams from late October
Chapter 02

Why Years 5 and 6 matter more than they look

These are the years when many children either click with maths or quietly decide they are “not a maths person”. Working fluently between fractions, decimals and percentages is the single best preparation for secondary school, because Year 7 algebra is built on top of it.

Chapter 03

VCE maths: General, Methods or Specialist?

General Mathematics is the study most Victorians take. Methods is a common prerequisite for university courses in science and engineering, and Specialist assumes Methods too. Scaling moves every year, so it is a poor reason on its own to pick one.

Chapter 04

The step from Year 10 into Methods Units 1 and 2

Functions and calculus arrive in Units 1 and 2, and some students step across to General. Two habits pay off early: practising without a calculator, and building the bound reference steadily through the year instead of in the final weeks.

Questions about maths tutoring in Melbourne

From A$65 an hour, the same rate from Prep to VCE. There’s no contract or sign-up fee, and you pay after each lesson. A qualified teacher is from A$75 an hour.

Yes. We match senior students with tutors who know their VCE maths study, so lessons follow the current SAC and the November exams.

For most students, yes. A regular hour with the same tutor fixes gaps before they grow. Some VCE students add a second lesson before exams.

Yes. Tutors cover the maths behind NAPLAN and the selective entry exam as part of weekly lessons, built on what your child’s class is learning.

How a tutor helps

Uses blocks, number lines and games to make place value concrete, then builds quick recall of number facts.

Based on the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics Version 2.0, Foundation to Level 2.

Years 3 to 6

Levels 3 to 6 of the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics 2.0 build times tables, fractions, decimals, percentages and measurement. NAPLAN numeracy is sat in Years 3 and 5.

Year 3

  • Numbers to 10 000
  • Times tables
  • Unit fractions
  • Metric measurement
  • Time to the minute
  • Tables and graphs

Year 4

  • Times tables to 10x10
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Decimals to hundredths
  • Angles
  • Chance

Year 5

  • Factors and multiples
  • Multiplying larger numbers
  • Division with remainders
  • Adding fractions

  • Percentage discounts
  • Cartesian plane
  • Angle rules
Worked example

What is 3/4 of 24?

Answer18

How a tutor helps

Finds the exact gap, often a times table or a fraction idea, and fixes it before the next topic builds on it.

Based on the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics Version 2.0, Levels 3 to 6.

Years 7 and 8

Levels 7 and 8 of the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics 2.0 move into indices, integers, algebra and linear equations, plus Pythagoras' theorem, ratios and formal geometry.

Year 7

  • Index notation
  • Adding and subtracting integers
  • Fractions and percentages
  • Algebraic expressions
  • Area and volume
  • Angles and parallel lines

Year 8

  • Integer operations
  • Index laws
  • Linear equations
  • Pythagoras' theorem
  • Circle area and circumference
  • Ratios and rates
Worked example

Solve 3x + 5 = 20.

Answerx = 5

How a tutor helps

Makes every line of working visible, so your child can explain why a method works, not just copy it.

Based on the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics Version 2.0, Levels 7 and 8.

Years 9 and 10

Levels 9 and 10 of the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics 2.0 bring trigonometry, quadratics and probability. Year 10 results often shape which VCE maths study is realistic.

Year 9

  • Scientific notation
  • Expanding binomials
  • Linear graphs
  • Trigonometry
  • Surface area and volume
  • Two-step probability

Year 10

  • Quadratic equations

  • Geometric proofs
  • Conditional probability
  • Scatterplots
Worked example

Solve x2 − 5x + 6 = 0.

Answerx = 2 or x = 3

How a tutor helps

Secures algebra and trigonometry so Methods stays a real option, and helps you weigh up the Year 10 maths choice.

Based on the Victorian Curriculum Mathematics Version 2.0, Levels 9 and 10.

VCE General Mathematics

VCE General Mathematics follows the VCAA Mathematics Study Design. Units 3 and 4 cover data analysis, recursion and finance, matrices and networks, assessed through SACs and two exams.

Year 11 (Units 1 and 2)

  • Data distributions
  • Arithmetic and geometric sequences
  • Linear relations
  • Financial maths
  • Matrices
  • Graphs and networks

Year 12 (Units 3 and 4)

  • Time series
  • Recursion and finance
  • Transition matrices
  • Networks and decision maths
Worked example

$5000 at 4% a year, compounding. Value after 2 years?

Year 11 (Units 1 and 2)

  • Functions and graphs
  • Polynomials
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Circular functions
  • Introduction to calculus
  • Probability

Year 12 (Units 3 and 4)

Differentiate f(x) = x2e3x.

Answerf′(x) = xe3x(3x + 2)

How a tutor helps

Drills Exam 1 by hand with no calculator, and practises CAS skills for Exam 2 so the calculator saves time.

Based on the VCAA VCE Mathematics Study Design, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics Units 1 to 4.
