How English tutoring works in Melbourne

  1. We match your child with a tutor who knows the Victorian Curriculum and VCE. The same tutor, at the same time, every week.

  2. Their tutor sets goals around your child and what they're learning in class, then reviews their progress and adjusts the program as they go.

  3. Weekly lessons after school or on weekends that follow what their class covers each term of the Victorian school year, from NAPLAN to SACs.

  4. After every lesson you get a written report: what was covered, how it went and what comes next. So you always know where things stand.

A parent's guide to English in Melbourne, Prep to VCE

What Melbourne parents ask most, from NAPLAN writing to the VCE English exam.

Get matched with an English tutor
Chapter 01

Why English carries extra weight in the VCE

Every VCE student completes a Units 3 and 4 English sequence, and VTAC needs a scored Units 3 and 4 English study before it will calculate an ATAR. So the real question for a Melbourne family is not whether English matters, but which English.

Chapter 02

Which of the four VCE English studies suits your child?

The choice is made in Year 10. Scaling shifts every year with the students who take each study, so it is a weak reason on its own to switch.

English
The broadest course
EAL
The same core skills, for eligible students
English Language
For students who like patterns, grammar and evidence
Literature
Close reading, for keen readers
Chapter 03

What the VCE English exam asks for

The English exam has three sections in three hours: an analytical response to a set text, a piece of their own writing, and an analysis of how a writer persuades. It usually opens the exam period in late October, so timed practice in Term 3 matters.

Chapter 04

Why writing gets harder as year levels rise

Writing does not get worse with age; the expectations rise faster. Each year asks for longer, better organised pieces, so a child who coped in Year 5 can find Year 8 much harder.

Questions about English tutoring in Melbourne

From A$65 an hour, the same rate from Prep to VCE. No contracts or sign-up fee, and you pay after each lesson. A qualified teacher is from A$75 an hour.

Yes. We match VCE students with tutors who know their study, whether that’s English, EAL, English Language or Literature.

For most students, yes. One hour a week on reading and writing adds up quickly. VCE students sometimes add time before SACs and exams.

We have tutors experienced with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and autism, and we match your child with a tutor who has experience with their learning needs.
