How maths tutoring works in Brisbane

  1. We match your child with a tutor who knows the Queensland curriculum and the QCE. The same tutor, at the same time, every week.

  2. Their tutor sets goals around your child and what they're learning in class, then reviews their progress and adjusts the program as they go.

  3. Weekly lessons after school or on weekends that follow the units their class covers each term of the Queensland school year, from NAPLAN to the QCE.

  4. After every lesson you get a written report: what was covered, how it went and what comes next. So you always know where things stand.

A parent's guide to maths in Brisbane, Prep to QCE

What Queensland parents ask most, from early NAPLAN results to Year 12 exams.

Get matched with a maths tutor
Chapter 01

Reading a Queensland NAPLAN result

A Year 3 NAPLAN result is a snapshot, not a verdict. What it does tell you is which skills to look at first: place value, times tables and worded problems.

Chapter 02

Why maths changes shape in high school

In primary school a lot of maths is about getting the answer. From Year 7, students have to show the steps, use letters in place of numbers, and explain why a method works. The missing step is often negative numbers, fractions or rearranging an equation.

Chapter 03

Choosing QCE maths: General, Methods or Specialist

Queensland offers four main maths subjects in Years 11 and 12: General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics and Essential Mathematics. Choose the subject your child can do well in and that their likely uni courses ask for.

Chapter 04

How QCE Methods is assessed

In Year 12, students complete three internal assessments set by their school, then the external exam in Term 4: one paper without technology and one with it, each worth 25%. Because the exam carries half the result, steady work across Year 12 matters more than a late push.

Questions about maths tutoring in Brisbane

From A$65 an hour, the same rate from Prep to Year 12. No contracts or sign-up fee, and you pay after each lesson. A qualified teacher is from A$75 an hour.

Yes. Tutors help students understand the task, plan their work and practise the maths, while the work itself stays the student’s own.

For most students, yes. A regular hour with one tutor keeps them in step with class. Some senior students add a lesson before the external exam.

Worked example

A 9 cm by 4 cm rectangle. Perimeter and area?

Answer26 cm and 36 cm2

How a tutor helps

Targets place value, times tables and worded problems, the skills a NAPLAN result usually points to first.

Based on the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics Version 9, Years 3 to 6.

Years 7 and 8

High school maths under the Australian Curriculum v9 moves into indices, integers, algebra and linear equations, plus Pythagoras' theorem in Year 8.

Year 7

How a tutor helps

Fills gaps in negative numbers and fractions, the missing steps that most often cause trouble in Years 8 and 9.

Based on the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics Version 9, Years 7 and 8.

Years 9 and 10

Years 9 and 10 of the Australian Curriculum v9 cover trigonometry, quadratics and probability, and Year 10 results guide the choice of senior maths subject.
