Usually the writing, not the reading. Many students understand the novel and still lose points, because they cannot turn what they know into a clear argument with evidence. Others read fluently but miss the inference questions. The tutor starts with a recent piece of marked school work to see which problem it is.
What does the first lesson look like?

What does an English tutor cover at each grade?
In elementary school, English tutoring covers phonics, reading fluency and comprehension, spelling, grammar, and narrative and persuasive writing, including preparation for state reading and writing tests. From 6th to 10th grade it moves to novel and poetry study, analytical paragraphs, literary analysis essays and persuasive speeches.
In 11th and 12th grade the tutor works to the student's own course: English III and IV, Honors English, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, or IB English A.
