Parents at Houston Independent School District often start with a math tutor, because gaps in fractions or algebra show up fast on homework and on the STAAR in spring. Reading tutoring is the other big one for younger kids. Nineteen school districts exist within the city of Houston. The largest is Houston Independent School District, the biggest in Texas and the seventh-largest in the country, with over 100 campuses running as magnet or vanguard schools in areas like health professions, the arts and the sciences. Many families also look at charter schools, or at the more than 300 private schools in the Houston area. Every Texas public school student takes the STAAR.
Rice University, the University of Houston, Texas Southern and the University of St. Thomas are all in the city, and Houston Community College has its main campus in Midtown. For teens thinking about those schools, steady grades in high school matter. Your tutor plans from the work your child's teacher sets and the Texas standards, and adds STAAR-style questions as test day nears. Houston students in a magnet program get lessons matched to their own coursework.
Houston is usually described as inside or outside the 610 Loop. Inside sit Downtown, Midtown and older neighborhoods. Outside are business districts such as Uptown, Westchase, the Energy Corridor and Greenspoint, with Beltway 8 and the Grand Parkway farther out. Live online lessons give each of those areas the same choice of tutors. Families pick after-school, evening or weekend times, and no one sits in traffic to get there. Parts of Houston reach into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, and those families join the same way. The Houston area had more funded TEFA students than any other part of Texas as of July 2026: 17,915 in Region 4, according to the Texas Comptroller. By home school district, 3,327 lived in Houston ISD, the most of any district in the state, followed by 2,024 in Fort Bend ISD, 1,596 in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and 1,156 in Katy ISD (also as of July 2026). What your child's account holds depends on where they learn. For 2026-27, a homeschool student's account holds $2,000 and a private school student's account holds $10,474. If your child has a current Texas IEP and attends a participating private school, your child's TEFA account can hold up to $30,000 a year, though most receive less. A homeschooled child with an IEP gets $2,000. Tutoring has no separate limit beyond your child's balance.
