The same teacher every week, and a bond that keeps growing

Emma was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia when she was young, and more recently with ADHD. Her mom, Jill, chose Tutero because she read that we were equipped to support children with ADHD. Emma works with the same teacher, Lori, every week. Over time they have built a real bond: with Lori, Emma is focused, gets the encouragement she needs, and never asks to skip a lesson. Lori is part of Emma’s week, not a quick fix, and Jill sees the results.

“She really likes Lori, they’ve formed a bond.”
Jill, Emma’s mom
“She never says she doesn’t want tutoring, she always wants to.”

TuteroLive 1-on-1 lessons
  • Does my scholarship cover it?

If it is UA or PEP, yes. Families on UA or PEP pay $0 out of pocket, with nothing to pay upfront. Not sure which scholarship your child has? It is shown at the top of their EMA account.

  • What happens in the first lesson?

Their teacher gets to know them. One hour, 1-on-1, working on what your child is learning right now. The teacher sees what is solid and where the gaps are, with any IEP goals in mind. Afterwards you get a written report and a plan in the parent app.

  • Will I have to explain my child again?

No. You tell us once. Share the IEP on your first call and its goals and accommodations go into the plan before lesson one. Your child keeps the same teacher every week, so nobody has to start over.

TuteroLive 1-on-1 lessons
  • Why are they falling behind?

Usually a gap, not ability. Most subjects build on themselves: a gap in fractions in 5th grade becomes an algebra problem in 8th grade. Most students who say they hate a subject are missing two or three specific ideas. The first lesson finds them.

  • What happens in the first lesson?

A diagnosis, then a plan. One hour, 1-on-1, working through what your child is learning right now. The tutor watches how they approach a problem and maps what is solid and what is not. Afterwards a written report and a plan land in the parent app.

  • When will grades move?

Confidence first, grades next. Most parents see confidence change first, then grades at the next test or report card. One lesson a week through the semester, with a check-in from your account manager.

Los Angeles tutoring questions

Scholarships, payment, teachers and IEPs, answered in full.

Find your child’s teacher

What should I look for in a Los Angeles tutoring company?

Look for careful tutor selection, one consistent tutor, regular updates and no lock-in contract. Those four things matter more than a big brand name. At Tutero, tutors come from the top 2% of applicants, your child keeps the same tutor every week, you get a report after each lesson and you can stop at any time.

Is a private tutor better than a tutoring center in LA?

For most kids, a private 1-on-1 tutor gives more attention than a center where one adult moves between several students. Every minute of the lesson is about your child. With Tutero the private lesson happens online, so you also skip the drive across Los Angeles, which can take longer than the lesson itself.

Do you have English and writing tutors in Los Angeles?

Yes. English tutoring covers reading comprehension, grammar, essay structure and literary analysis from elementary school to AP English. The tutor works from your child's actual assignments, so if a history essay or a book report is due, that becomes the lesson. Many LA parents start here because writing is hard to help with at home.

Can you prepare my teen for the SAT?

Yes. SAT tutoring starts with a practice test section to see where your teen is losing points. Lessons then focus on those question types in Reading and Writing and in Math, with timed practice on the digital format. The same tutor can also help with school subjects so test prep does not push classwork aside.

Do Tutero tutors follow the LAUSD curriculum?

Yes. Tutors plan lessons from the homework, units and tests your child brings home from Los Angeles Unified School District. If your child attends a private or charter school, or is homeschooled, the tutor follows that curriculum instead. The spring CAASPP tests are covered as part of regular lessons. Parents can share test dates so the tutor plans ahead.

How much does private tutoring in Los Angeles cost?

Each Los Angeles family is given a custom quote, with one clear rate across every grade. You will not sign a contract, and you can pause or stop whenever you like. Your rate includes tutor matching, a written report after each lesson and a personal account manager who tracks progress each term.

Choosing a Los Angeles tutoring company

Los Angeles has hundreds of tutoring companies and private tutors, which makes choosing one surprisingly hard. When you compare, look at four things. Who picks the tutor, and how carefully? Does your child keep the same person every week? Will you actually hear what happened in each lesson? And are you locked into a package?

Here is how Tutero answers those. Tutors are handpicked from the top 2% of applicants and matched to your child's subject and personality. Your child keeps that tutor week after week, and your account manager finds a better match if the fit is wrong. After each lesson, a written report goes to the parent app. There are no contracts. Lessons are private, live and online, which in a city this size means no freeway time between school and tutoring. Tutors plan from your child's own Los Angeles Unified School District classwork, or from any private school or homeschool curriculum, and prepare students for California's CAASPP tests, the SAT and AP exams. English and writing, math, and SAT prep are the subjects LA families ask for most.

Tutoring in Los Angeles, California at a glance

Schools in Los Angeles teach to the California Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math. Every Tutero lesson follows these standards and your child's own school or homeschool work, so practice for the state tests below is built into the regular week.

  • County Los Angeles County
  • School district Los Angeles Unified School District
  • State standards California Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math
  • State tests, grades 3-8 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP): Smarter Balanced English and math in grades 3-8, California Science Test (CAST) in grades 5 and 8
  • High school tests Smarter Balanced English and math in grade 11, and the California Science Test once in high school (grade 10, 11 or 12)
  • Nearby areas we cover Alhambra, Torrance, Long Beach, Anaheim
  • How lessons work Live 1-on-1 online with an expert tutor, the same tutor each week
  • Grades and subjects Kindergarten to 12th grade, math, reading, writing, science and test prep
  • Lesson times Weekdays, evenings and weekends

What Los Angeles students are tested on, and how we help

Many children in Los Angeles attend the Los Angeles Unified School District, while others are at charter, private or homeschool programs across the city. For public school students, California's yearly check is the CAASPP. Its main part, the Smarter Balanced tests, looks at English language arts and math, and the results show how a child's skills compare with the state's standards for their grade. Because every public school in California gives the same tests, the CAASPP is a shared yardstick, whichever part of Los Angeles you live in.

Tutero tutoring starts with the work in your child's backpack: the reading log, the math unit, the essay draft. The tutor plans from that, keeps each lesson in line with California's standards and makes sure the skills on the CAASPP get steady practice. Families searching in LA also ask about Spanish and French class support, and older students can add SAT prep as high school moves on.

San Fernando Valley to the Basin: Los Angeles online lessons

Los Angeles covers about 469 square miles, from the Los Angeles Basin by the Pacific up through the Santa Monica Mountains and into the San Fernando Valley, with the San Gabriel Valley on its eastern edge. Nearby cities such as Alhambra, Torrance and Long Beach add even more ground. For a family, that means the right tutor could easily live on the far side of the county. Tutero lessons are live online, so a student in the Valley and a student near the coast choose from the same tutors, at weekday, evening or weekend times. Your child learns at home, and you skip the drive entirely.
