Emma was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia when she was young, and more recently with ADHD. Her mom, Jill, chose Tutero because she read that we were equipped to support children with ADHD. Emma works with the same teacher, Lori, every week. Over time they have built a real bond: with Lori, Emma is focused, gets the encouragement she needs, and never asks to skip a lesson. Lori is part of Emma’s week, not a quick fix, and Jill sees the results.
“She really likes Lori, they’ve formed a bond.”

If it is UA or PEP, yes. Families on UA or PEP pay $0 out of pocket, with nothing to pay upfront. Not sure which scholarship your child has? It is shown at the top of their EMA account.
Their teacher gets to know them. One hour, 1-on-1, working on what your child is learning right now. The teacher sees what is solid and where the gaps are, with any IEP goals in mind. Afterwards you get a written report and a plan in the parent app.
No. You tell us once. Share the IEP on your first call and its goals and accommodations go into the plan before lesson one. Your child keeps the same teacher every week, so nobody has to start over.
Straight answers from 310,000+ lessons.

Usually a gap, not ability. Most subjects build on themselves: a gap in fractions in 5th grade becomes an algebra problem in 8th grade. Most students who say they hate a subject are missing two or three specific ideas. The first lesson finds them.
A diagnosis, then a plan. One hour, 1-on-1, working through what your child is learning right now. The tutor watches how they approach a problem and maps what is solid and what is not. Afterwards a written report and a plan land in the parent app.
Confidence first, grades next. Most parents see confidence change first, then grades at the next test or report card. One lesson a week through the semester, with a check-in from your account manager.

Can you use TEFA funds for tutoring in Texas?
Yes. Tutoring from an approved TEFA vendor is an approved expense, and Tutero is an approved TEFA vendor. You pay for lessons from your child's TEFA account in the TEFA marketplace, so nothing comes out of your pocket.
How do I pay for tutoring with my TEFA account?
You order lessons from Tutero in the TEFA marketplace, which Odyssey runs for the state, and they are paid from your child's account. Texas has no reimbursement, so tutoring paid any other way is not covered. Your education specialist walks you through each step on your first call.
Can TEFA pay for autism tutoring?
Yes. Tutoring from an approved TEFA vendor is an approved expense whether or not your child has a diagnosis or an IEP. Tutero matches your child with a tutor who has experience with autism, and your child keeps the same tutor every week.
Is tutoring the same as therapy for a child with autism?
No. Tutoring teaches academic subjects such as reading, writing and math. Speech, occupational and behavioral therapy are separate TEFA marketplace categories with their own rules, covered only when Medicaid, CHIP, other benefits, insurance or a public school does not pay. Tutero provides 1-on-1 tutoring.
Can we use Tutero in Texas without TEFA?
Yes. Any Texas family can book 1-on-1 online lessons with Tutero, whether or not they have a TEFA account. Lessons follow your child's schoolwork and the Texas TEKS standards, and there are no contracts.
What if we are still on the TEFA waitlist?
You can talk to us now. Tell us about your child in the 2-minute form, and an education specialist calls to learn about their schoolwork and any IEP. When your TEFA funds arrive, we match your child with the right tutor and weekly lessons begin.

Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) are state-funded education accounts that Texas families spend on approved schooling, services and supplies. The Texas Comptroller runs the program. Senate Bill 2 lists "fees for services provided by a private tutor or teaching service" as an approved expense, and tutoring has no separate cap beyond your child's balance. The 2026-27 school year is the first, and 116,574 students were taking part as of October 1, 2026, according to the Texas Comptroller.
Your child's funds sit in the TEFA marketplace, which Odyssey runs for the state. You choose an approved vendor there and pay for lessons from the account, so nothing comes out of your pocket. Texas has no reimbursement, so tutoring paid any other way comes from your own pocket. Tutero is an approved TEFA vendor, listed in the marketplace as an online teaching service. On your first call, an education specialist walks you through the marketplace and matches your child with one tutor. Our guide on how to pay for tutoring with TEFA shows each step.
Your child does not need an IEP or a diagnosis to spend TEFA funds on tutoring. How much the account holds depends on where your child learns. In 2026-27, a homeschool or other student gets $2,000 and a private school student gets $10,474. If your child has a current Texas IEP on file with the Texas Education Agency and attends a participating private school, your child's TEFA account can hold more, up to $30,000. Most students receive less than that. See TEFA eligibility, amounts and calculator for the details.

The key facts Texas parents ask about, from the Texas Comptroller and the official TEFA program site. Last updated October 8, 2026.
About 18% of TEFA participants have a disability, according to the Texas Comptroller's October 1, 2026 fact sheet. Tutero matches your child with a tutor who has experience with their learning needs, and no diagnosis is needed.
Many autistic children learn best when they know what is coming, and many bring deep focus and detailed knowledge to the topics they love. Good 1-on-1 tutoring builds on both. Look for a tutor who offers:
Learning from home helps many children too. Online lessons mean no travel, no new building and no busy waiting room, and your child works from a space they know. A few things make the first weeks easier: the same room and the same time each week, headphones if background noise is a distraction, and talking through what the first lesson will look like beforehand. Younger children often do best with a parent nearby for the first few lessons.
Before you choose any tutor, ask: Have you taught autistic children of this age? How do you handle transitions and breaks? What do you do if my child gets upset or shuts down mid-lesson? How will I hear what worked? With Tutero, share your child's IEP and what helps or overwhelms them on your first call, so their tutor knows their accommodations before lesson one. You get a written report after every lesson, so home and lessons stay in step. Read more on our online tutoring page for learning differences.
Some honest limits. Tutoring teaches academic skills such as reading, writing and math, and it does not replace speech, occupational or behavioral therapy. TEFA can pay for those separately: the marketplace lists them, and educational therapies are covered only when Medicaid, CHIP, other government benefits, private insurance or a public school does not pay. If you are weighing a private school, state law requires families to be told that a private school is not subject to federal and state special education laws in the same way as a public school, so ask how it supports children like yours. Online lessons also do not suit every child. A child who needs hands-on support in the room may need a different setting.
Children with ADHD often bring energy, curiosity and big ideas to a lesson. Good tutoring works with that energy: a short agenda your child can see, work in small blocks with quick changes of activity, and steady practice at breaking big assignments into steps. In a 1-on-1 online lesson there are no classmates to watch, so the tutor sees when attention drifts and can change the pace right away. You can also pick a lesson time when your child is at their best. See our online ADHD tutoring page for more.
Many children with dyslexia are quick thinkers whose reading has not caught up with their ideas yet. Good dyslexia tutoring teaches sounds, letter patterns and spelling rules directly and in order, revisits them every lesson until they stick, ties them to your child's class reading and spelling lists, and keeps discussion at grade level while decoding catches up. This approach is often called structured literacy. Tutero tutors also have experience with dyscalculia. See our online dyslexia tutoring page for more.
Does your child have an IEP? Read TEFA tutoring for students with an IEP and our guide to TEFA for students with disabilities to see how an IEP changes your child's account.
Tutero lessons are live, 1-on-1 and online, so a family in Houston, Lubbock or the Rio Grande Valley has the same choice of tutors, with lesson times on weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends. Each lesson follows your child's own schoolwork and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards they are graded on, from kindergarten reading and math to high school algebra, science and essay writing.
TEFA is one way to pay, but you do not need an account to work with Tutero. Families whose child attends public school, or who are still on the TEFA waitlist, can book the same tutors and the same weekly lessons, with no contracts. If you are waiting on TEFA funds, you can also talk to us now and start lessons once your funds arrive.
Most TEFA families live in the big metro areas. The Houston region alone had 17,915 funded students in July 2026, followed by the Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin regions, according to the Comptroller's annual demographic report. Homeschool families can use lessons alongside their own curriculum. See homeschool tutoring in Texas for how that works.
