What the Unique Abilities Scholarship Offers

The Unique Abilities Scholarship, offered under Florida’s Family Empowerment Scholarship program (FES-UA), is a vital resource for students with diagnosed special needs. This scholarship empowers families with flexible Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that can be used toward approved services—including high-quality tutoring tailored to each learner’s unique profile. Whether a student is on the autism spectrum, lives with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, or another qualifying condition, access to one-on-one academic support can transform their educational journey. At Tutero, we understand that no two students are alike. That’s why we design every tutoring session around the student’s strengths, challenges, and goals, offering support in core subjects, homework assistance, and skills reinforcement. Our tutors don’t just teach—they listen, adapt, and guide each child toward meaningful growth. With the Unique Abilities Scholarship, families no longer have to settle for a one-size-fits-all approach. They can invest in personalized tutoring that meets their child where they are and helps them move forward.

Who Qualifies for the Unique Abilities Scholarship and What It Covers

The FES-UA is available to Florida students with one or more qualifying diagnoses, including—but not limited to—autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, speech and language impairments, and specific learning disabilities. Families apply through Step Up For Students or AAA Scholarships, and once approved, receive an average of $8,000 to $10,000 annually in an ESA account. These funds can be used for a variety of approved educational expenses such as tuition, therapy, curriculum, and tutoring. What makes this program especially powerful is its flexibility—families can use the funds to build a well-rounded, individualized education plan that truly serves the child. At Tutero, we’re proud to be an approved tutoring provider under the scholarship. We help families understand how to use their scholarship dollars wisely, offering tutoring that supports academic development, executive functioning skills, and curriculum alignment. With our help, students can overcome barriers to learning and gain the confidence needed to reach their full potential.

A range of tutoring services for families in Florida

Tailored Tutoring That Respects Individual Learning Needs

Every student learns differently—this is especially true for children with unique abilities. That’s why our tutoring model isn’t based on rigid lesson plans or cookie-cutter methods. At Tutero, we take a child-centered approach. Before tutoring begins, we collaborate with families to learn about the student’s strengths, goals, and challenges. We then match them with a tutor experienced in working with learners who may have sensory processing differences, attention challenges, or communication needs. Sessions focus not only on academic content but also on the skills that support learning—organisation, memory, and confidence. Whether a student needs support with basic numeracy, reading comprehension, or structured writing, we build a plan that scaffolds learning step by step. For students with speech or motor challenges, we incorporate alternative strategies to ensure understanding. With patience, empathy, and structure, our tutors help create an environment where students can thrive—on their own terms, and at their own pace. Tutero supports these students through the Unique Abilities Scholarship, with tutoring tailored to their learning style.

Flexible Online Tutoring Designed for Florida Families

Finding the right educational support shouldn’t mean rearranging your entire life. That’s why Tutero offers live, online tutoring that’s as flexible as it is effective. Our sessions can be scheduled around your child’s therapy appointments, school commitments, or other routines—without the need to travel. For many families using the Unique Abilities Scholarship, online tutoring has been a game-changer. It provides comfort, consistency, and convenience, all from home. Parents can sit in, monitor progress, and participate in shaping the tutoring journey. And for students who may struggle with new environments or transitions, learning in a familiar setting often enhances focus and reduces anxiety. We serve families across Florida—from Miami and Orlando to rural communities where in-person resources may be limited. Our goal is simple: make tutoring accessible, affordable (through your ESA), and adapted to your life. With Tutero, it’s easier than ever to integrate targeted learning support into your child’s everyday routine.

How do Tutero tutors adapt sessions for students with specific diagnoses like autism or ADHD?
plusminus

Tutors adjust pacing, communication style, and session structure based on the student's diagnosis and individual profile. For a student with ADHD, that might mean shorter activity blocks with built-in movement breaks. For a student on the autism spectrum, it could involve consistent session routines, clear visual instructions, and reduced open-ended prompting. Parents can share details from their child's evaluation or IEP to help the tutor tailor the approach from the first session.

Can Tutero coordinate with my child's school or IEP team?
plusminus

Tutero does not attend IEP meetings, but families can share IEP goals, progress reports, or accommodation plans with the tutor so sessions support those same objectives. If a student's IEP targets specific reading fluency benchmarks or math skills, the tutor can align session work to reinforce those areas. Parents serve as the bridge between Tutero and the school, and our team can prepare progress documentation that families can bring to IEP reviews.

What if my child has sensory sensitivities that affect online learning?
plusminus

Tutero sessions are conducted one-on-one in a quiet online environment, which many families find more manageable than a busy classroom. Tutors can adjust screen brightness expectations, reduce visual clutter in shared materials, and keep audio levels consistent. If a student needs breaks, silence between activities, or a slower pace, the tutor accommodates that. Parents who share specific sensory concerns upfront help the tutor prepare a session environment that works for the student.

How long does it take to see progress with Unique Abilities students?
plusminus

Progress timelines vary significantly depending on the student's starting point, the nature of their diagnosis, and how consistently they attend sessions. Some students show measurable improvement in foundational skills within four to six weeks of regular sessions. Others may need longer to build trust with the tutor before academic progress accelerates. Tutero tracks progress against the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards and shares updates with parents regularly so growth is visible even when it is gradual.

Can my child use Unique Abilities Scholarship funds for tutoring and therapies at the same time?
plusminus

Yes. The FES-UA education savings account can fund multiple approved services simultaneously, including tutoring, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and instructional materials. Families decide how to allocate their balance based on their child's needs. Tutero can help you estimate session costs so you can plan your ESA budget across all of your child's services without overspending in one area.

What happens during the first tutoring session for a Unique Abilities student?
plusminus

The first session is designed to be low-pressure. The tutor focuses on getting to know the student, understanding how they communicate, and identifying what they are comfortable with. There may be a brief informal assessment of academic skills, but the primary goal is to build rapport. The tutor uses what they learn in this session to plan future lessons at the right level and pace. Parents receive a summary afterward with the tutor's initial observations and recommended learning plan.
