The Unique Abilities (UA) scholarship — officially the Unique Abilities (UA) scholarship — is Florida's education savings account for students with a documented diagnosis, from autism and ADHD to dyslexia, Down syndrome, and dozens more. It serves children from age 3 through 12th grade (or up to age 22), and it's the only Step Up program that begins at age 3. Awards depend on your child's matrix of services level: most families receive around $10,000 a year, rising to roughly $22,000 at matrix level 254 and $34,000 at level 255. Funds live in a parent-controlled ESA and pay for 1-on-1 tutoring, therapies, curriculum, technology, and even specialized summer camps — with tutoring consistently among the highest-impact ways families invest it.

Who Qualifies for the UA Scholarship and What Does It Cover?
UA eligibility is diagnosis-based, not income-based. Qualifying diagnoses include autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia and specific learning disabilities, intellectual disability, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, hearing and visual impairments, traumatic brain injury, and others documented by a qualified healthcare professional. Families apply through Step Up For Students or AAA Scholarships, and once approved, funds appear in the EMA account on the quarterly schedule. The ESA flexes across tutoring, therapies, curriculum, and technology, and approved providers like Tutero are paid through EMA direct pay — meaning $0 out-of-pocket for your family. Many families pair weekly 1-on-1 lessons with therapy services in the same year, building an individualized plan that actually fits their child.
