The same teacher every week, and a bond that keeps growing

Emma was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia when she was young, and more recently with ADHD. Her mom, Jill, chose Tutero because she read that we were equipped to support children with ADHD. Emma works with the same teacher, Lori, every week. Over time they have built a real bond: with Lori, Emma is focused, gets the encouragement she needs, and never asks to skip a lesson. Lori is part of Emma’s week, not a quick fix, and Jill sees the results.

“She really likes Lori, they’ve formed a bond.”
Jill, Emma’s mom
“She never says she doesn’t want tutoring, she always wants to.”

TuteroLive 1-on-1 lessons
  • Does my scholarship cover it?

If it is UA or PEP, yes. Families on UA or PEP pay $0 out of pocket, with nothing to pay upfront. Not sure which scholarship your child has? It is shown at the top of their EMA account.

  • What happens in the first lesson?

Their teacher gets to know them. One hour, 1-on-1, working on what your child is learning right now. The teacher sees what is solid and where the gaps are, with any IEP goals in mind. Afterwards you get a written report and a plan in the parent app.

  • Will I have to explain my child again?

No. You tell us once. Share the IEP on your first call and its goals and accommodations go into the plan before lesson one. Your child keeps the same teacher every week, so nobody has to start over.

  • Why are they falling behind?

Usually a gap, not ability. Most subjects build on themselves: a gap in fractions in 5th grade becomes an algebra problem in 8th grade. Most students who say they hate a subject are missing two or three specific ideas. The first lesson finds them.

  • What happens in the first lesson?

A diagnosis, then a plan. One hour, 1-on-1, working through what your child is learning right now. The tutor watches how they approach a problem and maps what is solid and what is not. Afterwards a written report and a plan land in the parent app.

  • When will grades move?

Confidence first, grades next. Most parents see confidence change first, then grades at the next test or report card. One lesson a week through the semester, with a check-in from your account manager.

Scholarships, payment, teachers and IEPs, answered in full.

Find your child’s teacher

Do kids with an IEP get more TEFA money?

Only at a participating private school. A child with a current Texas IEP on file with TEA gets $10,474 plus the amount their district would receive under the IEP, and most receive less than the cap. A homeschooled child with an IEP gets $2,000.

Does a homeschooled child with an IEP get extra TEFA money?

No. The extra IEP funding is only for students at a participating private school. A homeschooled child with an IEP gets $2,000 a year in 2026-27, the same as other homeschool students.

Can my child get an IEP if they are not in public school?

Yes. You can ask your school district for an evaluation, and it must complete it within 45 school days of your consent. If your child is eligible, the district writes the IEP and uploads it to TEA's system. Whether a new IEP will count for 2027-28 has not been announced.

Does my child keep IEP protections at a private school?

Not in the same way. State law requires families to be told that a private school is not subject to federal and state special education laws in the same way as a public school. TEA says your child may still get some services from the district where the private school is located, so ask that district about equitable services.

Can we use PDSES and TEFA at the same time?

No. PDSES, TEA's one-time $1,500 grant, requires your child to be enrolled in a Texas public school, and TEFA funding requires your child to be out of public school. If you have unspent PDSES money, ask PDSEShelp@region10.org before leaving public school.

How does Tutero use my child's IEP?

Share it on your first call. Its goals and accommodations go into your child's plan before the first lesson, your child keeps the same teacher every week, and you get a written report after each lesson.

How TEFA pays for tutoring when your child has an IEP

Texas Education Freedom Accounts logo

Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) are state-funded education accounts for Texas children who learn outside public school, run by the Texas Comptroller. Senate Bill 2 lists "fees for services provided by a private tutor or teaching service" as an approved expense, and tutoring has no separate limit beyond your child's balance.

An IEP shapes TEFA in three ways. It can give your child priority when applications exceed funding. At a participating private school, a current Texas IEP adds money to the account. And it gives a tutor a clear starting point: the goals and accommodations your child's team has already agreed. About 18% of the 116,574 students in TEFA as of October 1, 2026 had a documented disability, according to the Comptroller.

You pay from your child's Wallet in the TEFA marketplace, which Odyssey runs for the state, so there is $0 out of pocket and nothing to claim back. Tutero is an approved TEFA vendor, listed in the marketplace as an online teaching service. Read how to pay for tutoring with TEFA for each step, or see our TEFA tutoring page for how Tutero works with Texas families.

TEFA IEP tutoring at a glance

The key facts for Texas parents of a child with an IEP, from the Texas Comptroller, TEA and the official TEFA program site. Last updated October 7, 2026.

  • How TEFA pays Tutoring from an approved TEFA vendor is an approved expense in every setting, paid from your child's account in the Odyssey marketplace. State law caps only technology, so tutoring has no separate limit beyond your child's balance
  • Which IEP adds money A current Texas IEP on file with TEA (2023-24, 2024-25 or 2025-26 school year), at a participating private school
  • Private school with a current Texas IEP Your child's TEFA account can hold $10,474 plus the amount your school district would receive under the IEP, up to $30,000 a year (2026-27). Most students receive less
  • Homeschool or other $2,000 a year (2026-27), with or without an IEP
  • Other proof of disability A district evaluation, an out-of-state or expired IEP, or the TEFA Disability Certification Form gives priority only
  • New IEP outside public school If you ask, your district must complete an evaluation within 45 school days of your consent, even if your child is not in public school
  • Therapies Covered only to the extent Medicaid, CHIP, other government benefits, private insurance or a public school does not pay, and given by or at the direction of a licensed physician or licensed therapist to address academic performance
  • How Tutero lessons work Live 1-on-1 online, with the same teacher each week, a plan from your child's schoolwork and IEP, and a written report after each lesson

What good tutoring for a student with an IEP looks like

An IEP describes what your child can already do as well as what comes next, which makes it a strong plan to teach from. Good tutoring uses it in four ways:

  • Lessons aim at the IEP goals. Each lesson works on a goal from the plan, alongside the schoolwork your child has that week.
  • Accommodations carry over. If the IEP gives extra time, breaks, read-aloud or a reduced workload, lessons do the same.
  • Progress is written down. You can see movement toward each goal, which helps at your next IEP meeting.
  • The same adult each time. A teacher who knows your child's plan does not need it explained again.

At Tutero, you share your child's IEP on the first call and its goals and accommodations go into the plan before lesson one. Your child keeps the same teacher every week, and you get a written report after each lesson. Tutero teachers support children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, autism and processing differences. See our online tutoring page for learning differences, or TEFA tutoring for autism if your child is on the autism spectrum.

How your child's IEP affects their TEFA account

The extra money depends on where your child learns, according to the Texas Comptroller. If your child has a current Texas IEP on file with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and attends a participating private school, your child's TEFA account can hold the $10,474 base plus the amount your school district would receive under that IEP, up to $30,000 a year. Most students receive less than that. A homeschooled child with an IEP gets $2,000, the same as other homeschool students. The rules behind that:

  • Which IEP counts. A Texas IEP from the 2023-24, 2024-25 or 2025-26 school year, on file with TEA by the end of the application period. Other proof, such as an expired or out-of-state IEP, gives priority only.
  • What sets the extra amount. Your school district of residence and the instructional arrangement code on the IEP. Odyssey's code list explains each code, and the amount in your award notice can change once your district is confirmed, according to the Comptroller's special education funding page.
  • Getting an IEP outside public school. You can ask your school district for an evaluation even if your child is not in public school. The district must complete it within 45 school days of your consent and, if your child is eligible, write an IEP and upload it to TEA's system. Parents cannot upload it themselves.
  • At a private school. State law requires families to be told that a private school is not subject to federal and state special education laws in the same way as a public school. TEA says your child may still get some services from the district where the private school is located, so ask that district about equitable services.
  • PDSES. TEA's one-time $1,500 PDSES grant is for public school students, so a child cannot use PDSES and TEFA at the same time.

Whether a new or updated IEP will count for 2027-28 has not been announced. Our guide to TEFA for students with disabilities covers appeals and the full proof table, and TEFA eligibility and account amounts covers income tiers.

Some honest limits. A tutor cannot write or change an IEP, and tutoring does not replace the services your district provides. Tutero lessons are online, so a child who needs in-person support may need a different setting. TEFA approval is a legal check. The Comptroller says a vendor's place in the marketplace "does not constitute an endorsement", so judge any tutor on how well they teach your child.
