ATAR Chemistry in Perth: a student and parent guide

How school marks and the ATAR Chemistry exam combine, and how to prepare for a 3-hour paper.

Get matched with a chemistry tutor
Chapter 01

Choosing ATAR Chemistry

Units 1 and 2 are Year 11 and Units 3 and 4 Year 12. Some university courses list chemistry as a prerequisite, so check TISC before choosing Year 11 courses.

Chapter 02

The step into Unit 1

Unit 1 adds the mole, and Unit 2 applies it to gases, solutions and acids. Year 12 equilibrium, buffers and redox assume it is automatic.

Chapter 03

School marks and the exam

Your combined mark averages your moderated school mark and your exam mark, so school tests count as much as the final exam.

School mark (moderated)
Half of the combined mark
ATAR exam
Half of the combined mark, three hours of working time
Chapter 04

Preparing for a 3-hour paper

The exam has ten minutes of reading time and three hours of working time. Full timed papers, then a review of every lost mark, build the pace it needs.

Questions about chemistry tutoring in Perth

From A$65 an hour, the same rate for Year 10 science as for Units 3 and 4. There’s no contract or sign-up fee, and you pay after each lesson.

Yes. We match you with a tutor who knows WA’s ATAR Chemistry course, so lessons follow your school tests, semester exams and preparation for the ATAR exam.

It is demanding because each unit builds on the last. Equilibrium, acids and redox in Units 3 and 4 all assume the mole calculations from Year 11 are automatic. Students who keep that base solid usually find Year 12 far more manageable.

It is a written exam with ten minutes of reading time and three hours of working time. Your combined score averages your moderated school mark and your exam mark, so school tests matter as much as the exam.

Curriculum guide

Chemistry in WA schools, year by year

What Perth students learn in chemistry at every year level, and how a chemistry tutor helps.

Get matched with a chemistry tutor

Years 9 and 10 science

In the WA science curriculum, Years 9 and 10 chemistry covers atoms, the periodic table and chemical reactions. ATAR Chemistry Unit 1 assumes all three.

Year 9

  • Protons, neutrons and electrons
  • Isotopes
  • Word and symbol equations
  • Conservation of mass
  • Acids, bases and neutralisation

Year 10

  • Periodic table patterns
  • How atoms form compounds
  • Balancing equations
  • Types of reactions
  • What changes reaction rate
Worked example

Balance: Al + O2 → Al2O3

Answer4Al + 3O2 → 2Al2O3

How a tutor helps

Makes formulas and balancing automatic before Year 11, so Unit 1 can focus on the mole.

Based on the Western Australian Curriculum: Science, Years 9 and 10.

Year 11: Units 1 and 2

Unit 1, Chemical fundamentals: structure, properties and reactions, and Unit 2, Molecular interactions and reactions. Gases, solutions, acids and reaction rates follow the mole.

Unit 1

  • Atomic structure
  • The periodic table
  • Bonding and properties
  • The mole and stoichiometry
  • Energy in reactions

Unit 2

  • Intermolecular forces
  • Gases
  • Aqueous solutions
  • Acids and bases
  • Rates of reaction
Worked example

How many moles are in 16.0 g of O2? (M = 32.00 g mol−1)

Answer0.500 mol

How a tutor helps

Builds speed with mole and concentration calculations, because semester exams reward accurate working under time.

Based on the SCSA Chemistry ATAR Year 11 Syllabus (teaching from January 2024).

Year 12: Units 3 and 4

Unit 3 covers equilibrium, acids and bases, and redox reactions; Unit 4 covers organic chemistry and chemical synthesis. The ATAR exam has three hours of working time.

Unit 3

  • Chemical equilibrium
  • Le Chatelier's principle
  • Acids, bases and pH
  • Buffers
  • Redox and electrochemical cells

Unit 4

  • Organic structure and naming
  • Organic reactions
  • Polymers
  • Proteins
  • Chemical synthesis
Worked example

In Zn + Cu2+ → Zn2+ + Cu, which species is oxidised?

AnswerZn is oxidised

How a tutor helps

Works through past ATAR papers section by section, then full papers in three hours before the exam.

Based on the SCSA Chemistry ATAR Year 12 Syllabus (teaching from January 2024).
