QCE Chemistry in Brisbane: a student and parent guide

How QCE Chemistry is assessed under the 2025 syllabus, and the maths it leans on.

Get matched with a chemistry tutor
Chapter 01

Choosing QCE Chemistry

Units 1 and 2 are usually Year 11 and Units 3 and 4 Year 12. Some university courses list chemistry as a prerequisite, so check QTAC before choosing senior subjects.

Chapter 02

The step from Year 10 science to Unit 1

Unit 1 adds the mole to Year 10 formulas and equations, and Unit 2 uses it straight away. Fix any gap before Unit 3 assessment begins.

Chapter 03

How Units 3 and 4 are assessed

Three internal assessments make up half your result and the external exam the other half.

IA1 data test
10 per cent
IA2 student experiment
20 per cent
IA3 research investigation
20 per cent
External exam
50 per cent
Chapter 04

The maths inside chemistry

Rearranging formulas, mole ratios, scientific notation and significant figures decide many marks, and Unit 3 adds logarithms for pH.

Questions about chemistry tutoring in Brisbane

From A$65 an hour, the same rate for Year 10 science as for Units 3 and 4. There’s no contract or sign-up fee, and you pay after each lesson.

Yes. We match you with a tutor who knows QCE Chemistry, so lessons follow your school’s units, the three internal assessments and the external exam.

Under the 2025 syllabus, three internal assessments make up half the result: a data test (10 per cent), a student experiment (20 per cent) and a research investigation (20 per cent). The external exam is the other 50 per cent.

Yes. A tutor can help you understand the task, plan your method, process data and check your reasoning. The report and the final response stay your own work.

Chemistry in Queensland schools, year by year

What Brisbane students learn in chemistry at every year level, and how a chemistry tutor helps.

Get matched with a chemistry tutor

Years 9 and 10 science

Queensland schools teach Years 9 and 10 science from the Australian Curriculum, where chemistry covers atoms, the periodic table and reactions. QCE Chemistry Unit 1 builds directly on it.

Year 9

  • Protons, neutrons and electrons
  • Isotopes
  • Word and symbol equations
  • Conservation of mass
  • Acids, bases and neutralisation

Year 10

  • Periodic table patterns
  • How atoms form compounds
  • Balancing equations
  • Types of reactions
  • What changes reaction rate
Worked example

Balance: H2 + O2 → H2O

Answer2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

How a tutor helps

Makes formulas and balancing automatic before Year 11, so Unit 1 can focus on the mole.

Based on the Australian Curriculum: Science Version 9.0, Years 9 and 10 (chemical sciences).

Year 11: Units 1 and 2

Unit 1, Chemical fundamentals, covers atoms, materials and reactions. Unit 2, Molecular interactions and reactions, covers gases, aqueous solutions, acidity and reaction rates.

Unit 1

  • Properties and structure of atoms
  • Properties and structure of materials
  • Chemical reactions and energy change
  • The mole

Unit 2

  • Intermolecular forces and gases
  • Aqueous solutions and acidity
  • Rates of chemical reactions
Worked example

0.20 mol of NaOH is dissolved to make 500 mL of solution. What is its concentration?

Answer0.40 mol L−1

How a tutor helps

Secures mole and concentration calculations in Year 11, because the data test and every Year 12 topic lean on them.

Based on the QCAA Chemistry 2025 General senior syllabus, Units 1 and 2.

Year 12: Units 3 and 4

Unit 3, Equilibrium, acids and redox reactions, and Unit 4, Structure, synthesis and design. Three internal assessments make up 50 per cent and the external exam the other 50 per cent.

Unit 3

  • Chemical equilibrium systems
  • Acids, bases and pH
  • Oxidation and reduction
  • Electrochemical cells

Unit 4

  • Organic structure and naming
  • Organic reactions
  • Polymers and biomolecules
  • Chemical synthesis and design
Worked example

What is the pH of 0.0010 mol L−1 NaOH at 25 °C?

AnswerpH = 11.0

How a tutor helps

Rehearses the data test format with unseen data sets, then works through past external exam questions under time.

Based on the QCAA Chemistry 2025 General senior syllabus, Units 3 and 4.
