Private 1:1 HSC Maths tutoring

Stage 6 Mathematics is not one subject. Mathematics Standard is a common Year 11 course that splits into Mathematics Standard 1 or Mathematics Standard 2 in Year 12, working through algebra, measurement, financial mathematics, networks and statistics. Mathematics Advanced covers functions, trigonometric functions, calculus, exponential and logarithmic functions, statistical analysis and financial mathematics. Mathematics Extension 1 adds proof, vectors and combinatorics. Mathematics Extension 2 is a Year 12 course built on proof, complex numbers, further integration and mechanics. Which course a student sits shapes the rest of their HSC, and it shapes who should be teaching them.

In Year 11 the school submits a grade to NESA, judged on the whole year against the Common Grade Scale for Preliminary courses. In Year 12 the school submits an assessment mark and the student sits the external HSC written paper, which is optional only in Mathematics Standard 1. School assessment in both years splits evenly between two mandatory components, and half of it rides on reasoning, justification and communication rather than on the final answer, which is why marks go missing on setting out. Year 11 is where that habit is either built or not.

NESA's performance band descriptions spell out what the top bands look like: applying concepts accurately in unfamiliar situations, selecting a strategy for multi-step problems, constructing and analysing mathematical models, and communicating reasoning with the right notation, diagrams and graphs. Plenty of marks go missing for reasons that have nothing to do with arithmetic: jumping three steps at once, leaving a justification unwritten, or answering a question the paper did not ask. Lessons work on the written argument as hard as they work on the maths underneath it.

Each course has a point where the ground shifts. In Mathematics Advanced it is calculus: differentiation is introduced first and integral calculus arrives later, so a shaky start on the first makes the second much harder. Trigonometry and the measure of angles catches students who never really left degrees behind. In Mathematics Standard it is the multi-step financial mathematics and networks questions, where the arithmetic is manageable but the reading is not. In Mathematics Extension 1 it is proof by mathematical induction and the first work with vectors, and in Extension 2, complex numbers and applying calculus to mechanics.

The match starts with the course. A Year 12 student in Mathematics Extension 1 needs something different from a Year 11 student in Mathematics Standard, so we ask which course, which year and which topics the school is teaching before matching anyone. The tutor then stays with the student, so the same gap is not re-diagnosed every few weeks. Lessons are 1:1 and online, which means a student in Sydney and a student in a regional NSW town choose from the same tutors rather than whoever lives nearby.

Lessons run on the student's own work: the assessment task notification the school has just handed out, the topic test that came back with marks missing, the question nobody could finish. Past HSC examination papers matter here too. NESA publishes them with marking guidelines and feedback, so a tutor can put a real HSC question in front of a student, watch how it gets set out, and mark it the way a marker would. Doing that repeatedly, on paper, is the part that is hard to get inside a full classroom.

Tutoring starts from A$65 per hour. There is no sign-up fee, no lock-in contract and nothing to pay in advance: each lesson is billed after it has been taught. Some students book one lesson a week across Year 11 and Year 12. Others add a second while a hard topic is running, then drop back to one.
