How A levels are graded, the dates that matter, the exam boards and planning the final months.
A levels in England are regulated by Ofqual and set by exam boards. Most students take three. They are linear, so every exam is sat at the end of Year 13 and covers both years of the course. Each subject is graded A* to E.
The AS level is now a separate qualification and does not count towards the A level. Universities make offers in grades, such as AAB, or in UCAS tariff points, and some courses name required subjects.
The sixth form year runs from September to July in three terms, each with a half term. Schools set their own mocks and coursework deadlines. University applications go through UCAS in Year 13, with two main deadlines.
Each school chooses a board for each subject. The DfE sets the core content, so the boards cover the same ground, but papers, question styles and coursework rules differ. Ask which board and specification your child sits in every subject, and practise with that board’s past papers.
Year 12 is the best time to fix gaps, because the step up from GCSE shows within the first half term. Weekly lessons work best when they follow class topics and set work: secure this week’s content, then go back to one weak spot before it grows.
After Year 13 mocks, the focus shifts to past papers, sat under timed conditions and marked against the board’s mark schemes. Mock results show which topics need the most time, and every lost mark is reworked before the summer exams.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own school work and exam board. Lessons are 1-to-1, with one tutor per subject, and you receive a written report after every lesson, so you always know what was covered and what comes next.
