How school works in England, from SATs to GCSEs and A levels, and when tutoring helps most.
GCSEs and A levels in England are regulated by Ofqual and set by exam boards such as AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. GCSEs are graded 9 to 1. A 4 is a standard pass and a 5 a strong pass, and most subjects are decided by exams at the end of Year 11.
A levels are graded A* to E, and every exam is sat at the end of Year 13. Universities make offers through UCAS in grades or tariff points, so steady work across both sixth form years matters.
Schools in England run from September to July in three terms: autumn, spring and summer, each with a half term. The national checks in primary school and the GCSE and A level exams follow the same pattern every year, and your child’s school will share the exact weeks.
Birmingham is one of the areas of England that keeps grammar schools, alongside its comprehensive schools. Entry to a grammar school is by an 11+ test, then each school’s admission criteria. Check the schools’ admissions pages for this year’s arrangements.
The 11+ is usually sat in September of Year 6, and registration often opens in Year 5. Test content varies by area, but most papers include some mix of English, Maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Many independent schools also set their own entrance tests in Year 6.
Most families start when a subject begins to feel hard, rather than the week before a test. In primary school that is often reading, spelling or times tables. In secondary school it is usually Year 7, when algebra and essay writing arrive, or Year 10, when GCSE courses begin.
In Year 11 and Year 13, lessons follow the school’s mock calendar: prepare for each mock, then use the results to plan revision. After mocks, lessons move to past papers under exam timing, with short review sessions in the weeks before exams start.
Tutero matches your child, ages 5 to 18, with a 1-to-1 tutor who knows the National Curriculum, GCSEs and A levels. Birmingham families keep the same tutor at the same time each week, lessons start from your child’s own school work, and you get a written report after every lesson. A qualified teacher is from £65 an hour.
What students in England learn at every year level, and how a tutor helps.

My son's grade has gone from D to now B in Maths. If you are second-guessing, you won't regret it. Gabby is an amazing tutor. Give them a go & share the love with your friends and families who are finding it tough to help their child in never-ending exams & assignments.

Our tutor was beyond outstanding, She went over and above with her time and availability, the way she related with to my 16yo and motivated her was excellent. Thank you for your help, couldn't have asked for a better result.

They answered my enquiry on a weekend within half an hour which I did not expect. The others I contacted at the same time, replied the following week. My nephew is learning with Andy and the great plus about Andy is he finished high school a few years ago and is now at Uni. The price is much more affordable my nephew has improved so much considering he has slight autism. Tutero, Joey and his team have proven very caring and considerate. Thank you Tutero.

My daughter’s tutor Sera has honestly been amazing. The connection was instant and Sera is so supportive and understanding. To receive a phone call from my daughter at school so happy after her maths class that she understood what was being taught was definitely so great to receive. Thank you.

Not only was the process made really simple and engaging, but Tutero also provided me a personalised page where I can track my sessions, organise tutors in different subjects if need be and a record of the work I needed to follow up on. If you need a tutor, but don't want all the logistical stress involved with tracking one down, I strongly recommend Tutero!

We had tutors for Chemistry and Maths Methods for our daughter in Grade 12. Both Luke and Francisco were fantastic and provided supportive assistance as well as increasing her confidence. I cannot thank them both enough.

My daughter has been having weekly sessions this term and the progress is definitely noticeable. Her tutor comes to each session prepared and provides amazing, honest feedback after each one. The communication is fantastic and we are very impressed overall. This has been the best solution for us as a busy family and I would definitely recommend our tutor to anyone who asks.
