How GCSE Maths is graded, the dates that matter, the exam boards and planning the final months.
GCSE Maths is regulated by Ofqual and set by exam boards. Students sit three papers at the end of Year 11, and one is non-calculator on most boards. There is no coursework, so the papers decide the grade.
There are two tiers. Foundation is graded 5 to 1 and Higher is graded 9 to 4, with an allowed 3. A 4 is a standard pass and a 5 a strong pass. Many sixth forms ask for a 6 or 7 to take A level Maths.
Each school sets its own mock dates and tier decisions, so ask early in Year 11. The summer papers are spread across May and June, and exam boards publish the timetable. A November resit series is available for students aged 16 and over.
Each school chooses one board for GCSE Maths. The DfE sets the content, so every board covers the same topics, but question styles and paper order differ. Ask which board your child sits and practise with that board’s past papers.
Year 10 is the calmest time to fix gaps, because algebra and ratio carry through every later topic. Weekly lessons work best when they follow class topics: secure this week’s work, then go back to one weak spot. Starting in Year 11 still helps, with more time on exam technique.
After mocks, the focus shifts to full papers for your child’s tier, timed and marked against the mark scheme. Keep a list of lost marks by topic and redo those questions a week later. Practise the non-calculator paper often, because speed matters there.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own class work and exam board. Lessons are 1-to-1, and you receive a written report after every lesson, so you always know what was covered and what comes next.
