VCAA frames each of the four units as a question. Unit 1 asks how organisms regulate their functions, and covers cell structure, transport across the plasma membrane, the cell cycle, stem cells and homeostasis. Unit 2 asks how inheritance impacts on diversity, from meiosis and pedigree charts through to adaptations and interdependencies. Unit 3 asks how cells maintain life, taking in nucleic acids, proteins, photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Unit 4 asks how life changes and responds to challenges: immunity, changes in allele frequencies and human change over time. Units 1 and 2 are assessed entirely by the school, so the result on a report card depends on the tasks that school sets. Units 3 and 4 are split. School-assessed Coursework in Unit 3 contributes 20 per cent of the study score, Unit 4 contributes 30 per cent, and the end-of-year examination carries the other 50 per cent. The coursework tasks are prescribed by VCAA: analysis of a biological case study, analysis of generated or collated data, a comparison drawn from three practical activities, a response to a contemporary bioethical issue, and the student-designed investigation in Unit 4.

Content alone does not carry a study score. The key science skills run across Units 1 to 4 and are assessed alongside the content: constructing aims and questions, formulating a hypothesis, identifying independent, dependent and controlled variables, recording data in a logbook, handling accuracy, precision, repeatability, reproducibility and validity, spotting outliers, and judging how far the evidence supports the hypothesis. Students also have to communicate in scientific form, including reports and posters. Lessons in biology tutoring spend as much time on those skills as on the content itself.

The topics that cost marks are consistent. In Unit 1 it is surface area to volume ratio, and the difference between osmosis, facilitated diffusion and active transport. In Unit 2 it is meiosis and reading a pedigree chart. In Unit 3 it is the steps of gene expression, and keeping the light dependent and light independent stages of photosynthesis apart from glycolysis, the Krebs Cycle and the electron transport chain. In Unit 4 it is the immune response and weighing the evidence for relatedness between species. Wording costs marks too, because the outcomes ask students to analyse, evaluate and compare, not describe.

Matching starts with the course, not a general science background. We look for a tutor who has worked through the current VCAA study design and can pick a student up at the exact outcome they are sitting on, whether that is Unit 1 homeostasis or the Unit 4 investigation. A lesson starts with the student's own work.
