
Build an order of operations worksheet pitched at one rung of the ladder: two operations, then parentheses, then exponents, then nested grouping symbols. Every question leaves room to rewrite the expression line by line, so you can see where a Grade 6 student went wrong. Print it with the answer key.

Set the difficulty by the shape of the expression, not by bigger numbers. Mild sheets stay at two operations and one set of parentheses. Medium adds exponents and division that has to be read left to right. Spicy runs nested grouping symbols and a fraction bar over a whole expression.


Puzzle questions hide the rule inside something worth solving: a scoreboard total, a store receipt, a target number to hit by inserting parentheses in one place. Students argue about where the parentheses go.
Problem solving questions give the answer and ask which step broke. A student reads a worked solution where all the multiplication was done before any division, finds the line that goes wrong, and writes the correct expression underneath it.

Each expression sits on its own line with blank rows beneath it, so a student rewrites the whole expression after every step instead of squeezing the work into a margin.
One sheet, three levels, so the room sorts itself. Students still adding before multiplying stay on the two-operation set. Students who have parentheses secure move to nested grouping symbols and expressions written over a fraction bar.
Change any question after it generates. Ask for the same expression with negative numbers inside the parentheses, replace a grouping symbol with a fraction bar, or add a harder final row for the students who finish early.

PEMDAS, BIDMAS and BODMAS Are the Same Rule
PEMDAS, BIDMAS and BODMAS are three mnemonics for one convention, and a math department will use all three. Parentheses first. Then exponents. Then multiplication and division, taken left to right as equals, which is the part every mnemonic hides. Then addition and subtraction, also left to right. The Common Core State Standards put the grouping symbols in Grade 5 (5.OA.A.1) and the conventional order without parentheses in Grade 6 (6.EE.A.2c).
Where the Ladder Breaks: Left to Right, and the Fraction Bar
Four errors account for most of the red pen. A student does all the multiplication before any division, so 24 ÷ 6 × 2 comes out as 2 instead of 8. A student ignores left to right in the addition and subtraction row. A student treats the fraction bar as plain division rather than a grouping symbol. And a student drops a parenthesis while copying the line down, then solves a different question. Each sheet targets one of them.
What Changes Between Grade 5 and Grade 8
Grade 5 sheets stay with whole numbers and one set of parentheses (5.OA.A.1), including expressions written to record a calculation rather than to be evaluated (5.OA.A.2). Grade 6 adds whole-number exponents (6.EE.A.1). Grade 7 puts negative numbers inside the grouping symbols and runs multi-step problems with rational numbers (7.NS.A.3).
