Unlocking Literacy with the Florida Reading Scholarship
Reading is the gateway to lifelong learning, but when students fall behind, catching up can feel overwhelming. That’s where the Florida Reading Scholarship comes in. Designed to support students in grades 3–5 who scored below grade level on state English Language Arts (ELA) assessments, the scholarship offers $500 annually to help fund essential services like tutoring. At Tutero, we specialize in 1-on-1 online reading instruction tailored to each child's needs, turning reading challenges into growth opportunities. Whether your child is struggling with decoding, fluency, or comprehension, our expert tutors provide structure, encouragement, and results—right in line with Florida standards and the scholarship’s guidelines.

Who Qualifies and How to Use the Reading Scholarship
The Florida Reading Scholarship is open to third through fifth graders enrolled in public schools who score below Level 3 on their ELA Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). Families can apply through Step Up For Students, and once approved, receive a $500 education savings account to use toward approved reading services. Tutoring, curriculum, and instructional materials are all eligible. Tutero’s programs are fully compatible, making it simple for families to direct their scholarship toward impactful tutoring sessions. We also assist with reimbursement documentation and scheduling, so families can focus less on paperwork and more on their child’s progress.

Aligned with Florida’s Literacy Standards and FAST Testing
Tutero’s reading instruction is carefully crafted to align with Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards and supports students preparing for Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) benchmarks. Our tutors help students meet and exceed grade-level expectations in ELA by reinforcing core reading skills like identifying the main idea, making inferences, and understanding text structure. This alignment not only improves classroom performance but also ensures measurable gains on state assessments. Our programs are designed with Florida’s curriculum in mind, offering families peace of mind that their child is making the right kind of progress—grounded in what schools actually teach and test.
Tutero sessions are designed to complement what the student is doing in the classroom, not replace it. If the school is using a structured literacy program or specific reading curriculum, the tutor can reinforce those same skills and strategies during sessions. Parents who share information about their child's classroom reading program help the tutor align session content so the student gets consistent messaging from both school and tutoring.
For younger students, a parent nearby can help with technology setup and provide encouragement, but the tutor handles all instruction. Parents do not need to teach or co-facilitate. After each session, Tutero sends a report so parents know what was covered and how to support practice at home. Simple activities like reading together for 15 minutes a day can reinforce what the tutor is building during sessions.
The tutor tracks progress through regular skill checks in areas like phonics accuracy, reading fluency, vocabulary use, and comprehension responses. These are compared against the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards benchmarks for the student's grade level. Parents receive updates after each session, and periodic progress summaries show growth over time. This documentation can also be shared with the student's school if needed.
Sessions are interactive and screen-based, using a mix of reading passages, guided questions, phonics exercises, and vocabulary activities. The tutor adapts the difficulty level in real time based on how the student responds. A session might begin with a brief warm-up reviewing previously learned skills, move into new material, and end with a short practice activity. Sessions are paced to keep young learners engaged without overwhelming them.
If the scholarship balance is used up or the account is closed, families can continue with Tutero by paying privately. Sessions start at $45 per hour with flexible scheduling. Families may also qualify for other Florida scholarship programs such as the FES-UA if the student has a qualifying diagnosis, or the PEP if the student is not enrolled in full-time public school. Our team can help you explore which options apply.
A computer, laptop, or tablet with a stable internet connection and a working microphone is all that is needed. A webcam is helpful but not required. Sessions run through a browser-based platform, so there is no special software to install. For younger students, a larger screen is recommended so reading passages and activities are easy to see. A quiet space where the student can focus also makes a significant difference in session quality.
