How A-Level results count for university, the dates in JC and what to weigh when choosing subjects.
The Singapore-Cambridge A-Level is set by SEAB with Cambridge. Each subject is graded A to E, with S as a sub-pass and U as ungraded. Local universities combine grades into a University Admission Score, where an H2 subject is worth twice an H1.
From the 2024 JC1 cohort, Project Work is graded pass or fail, and the fourth content subject counts only if it improves the score. That puts most of the weight on three H2 subjects and General Paper, so each H2 grade matters a great deal.
JC follows the MOE calendar, with terms from January to November. JC1 sets the foundations and ends with Promos. JC2 is short: content finishes by mid-year, then the focus turns to prelims and the national papers. SEAB publishes the exact timetable each year.
Most students take three H2 subjects and one H1, plus General Paper and Project Work. The combination must be contrasting: a science student takes at least one humanities or arts subject, and an arts student at least one mathematics or science subject.
What to weigh: university prerequisites come first. Many medicine, engineering and computing courses ask for H2 Mathematics or specific H2 sciences, so check course pages before locking in. Changing subjects after the first weeks of JC1 is hard, so choose with the two-year load in mind.
Early JC1 is the best time to start. The jump from secondary school is steep, lectures move fast, and H2 Mathematics and the sciences build on themselves week by week. Students who wait until after Promos can recover, but JC2 leaves only about half a year of new content.
In JC2, a good weekly rhythm is tutorial questions while content is still being taught, then one timed paper section per subject once topics close. After prelims, spend the weeks before the written papers on the questions that cost the most marks, and practise General Paper essays under time.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own school work: lecture notes, tutorial questions and the next test. In JC2 lessons shift to timed papers, prelim review and exam technique.
What A-Level students work on at each stage, and how a tutor helps.
JC1 brings lectures and tutorials at a much faster pace than secondary school. Promos at the end of the year decide promotion to JC2.
