How the Diploma is awarded, the exam sessions and deadlines, and how to choose Higher and Standard Level subjects.
The IB Diploma is set by the International Baccalaureate, not MOE. Each subject mixes final exams with internal assessment, which teachers mark and the IB moderates. That means a share of every grade is decided before the exam hall, through work done during the two years.
A Diploma needs at least 24 points, but points alone are not enough. Students must also complete CAS and avoid failing conditions, such as an E in TOK or the Extended Essay. Core work deserves steady attention, not a rush in the final months.
Schools in Singapore follow one of two IB exam sessions, depending on their calendar. Internal assessments and the Extended Essay are due months before the exams, on deadlines your school sets, so the busiest stretch often comes well before the final papers.
Students take three or four subjects at Higher Level and the rest at Standard Level. The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL and 150 for SL, so an HL subject is a much bigger commitment. Pick HL subjects your child is strong in, enjoys and their target course needs.
Check university requirements early. Many science, engineering and economics courses ask for a specific subject at Higher Level, often Mathematics Analysis and Approaches or a science. Changing subjects once the Diploma is underway means catching up on missed content and assessment.
The final MYP years are a good time to start, especially in Mathematics, where the step up to Diploma level is large. MYP subjects are graded 1 to 7 from four criteria, A to D, each marked out of 8, so a tutor can work on the exact criterion holding a grade back.
In the Diploma, steady weekly support through the first year works best, with internal assessment and Extended Essay drafts planned so they do not land in the same weeks. In the final months, switch to timed past paper questions and command terms, marked against IB markschemes.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own school work. Tutors follow each IB subject guide at Standard or Higher Level, from internal assessments and the Extended Essay to timed past papers.
