How IGCSE grades and tiers work, when exams sit and how to choose subjects with the next step in mind.
The IGCSE is set by an exam board, usually Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel, not by MOE. Each subject is graded on its own. Some subjects include coursework or a practical component that is marked by the school and moderated by the board.
In tiered subjects, the paper your child is entered for sets the grades they can reach. That makes the tier decision as important as the revision itself, especially in Mathematics and the sciences, where Core and Extended papers differ in content as well as difficulty.
International schools set their own calendars, so check your school’s dates. The exam series are fixed by the boards, and most students in Singapore sit the May to June series at the end of their second year.
Students choose IGCSE subjects in the year before the course starts. Think ahead to the IB Diploma or A-Level: a strong IGCSE in a subject is the usual base for taking it at Higher Level or as an A-Level.
Mathematics needs the most thought. Students aiming for Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or A-Level Mathematics, usually take Extended Mathematics, and many add Additional Mathematics. Tier entries are often confirmed in the final year, so mock results can move a student between tiers.
The first term of the course is the best time to start, because IGCSE syllabuses are long and the final year is mostly revision. Starting in the year before works well for students moving from another system, such as the MOE syllabus, who need time to adjust to new paper styles.
In the final six months, a good weekly rhythm is one past paper per subject in rotation, marked against the board’s mark scheme, with time on command words such as describe, explain and evaluate. Mocks show which tier is realistic, so treat them as a full rehearsal.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own school work. Tutors follow your school’s board and tier, from coursework and practicals to timed past papers before the exam series.
