How Sec 1 and 2 are assessed, the dates that matter and the choices that lead to Sec 3.
There is no national exam in Sec 1 or Sec 2. Results come from weighted assessments set by the school during the year and an end-of-year exam in Term 4, and each school sets its own weightings. MOE removed mid-year exams at every secondary level by 2023, so the class tests during the year carry real weight.
Under Full Subject-Based Banding, English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, Science and the Humanities are taken at G1, G2 or G3. The starting level follows your child’s Posting Group, and a strong PSLE result in a subject can let them take it at a more demanding level from Sec 1.
Secondary schools follow the MOE calendar: four terms from early January to November, with a June holiday. Most schools spread weighted assessments across Terms 1 to 3 and hold end-of-year exams in Term 4. Exact dates differ by school, so check the assessment plan your school sends home.
Schools review subject levels as the year goes on. A student doing well in a subject at G2 can move to G3, which keeps more Sec 3 options open. Sec 3 subject combinations are allocated on Sec 2 results, so the Sec 2 end-of-year exam carries extra weight.
What to weigh: Additional Mathematics and pure sciences usually need strong G3 Mathematics and Science results, and they are the common route to H2 Mathematics and sciences in JC. Interest matters too. A combination your child enjoys is easier to sustain through Sec 3 and Sec 4.
The best window is early Sec 1, before algebra and the faster pace build on each other. Many students who did well in P6 Mathematics find algebra a new kind of thinking. If Sec 1 went well, starting in Sec 2 still leaves a full year before Sec 3 subject choices are made.
Before each weighted assessment, a useful rhythm works backwards. Two weeks out, list the topics tested. One week out, do mixed practice under time. In the final days, redo every mistake. Across the year, a short weekly review of past topics beats cramming before the end-of-year exam.
Your child keeps the same tutor every week, and lessons start from their own school work: the topic in class, the next weighted assessment or gaps left from primary school. Tutors teach at the G1, G2 or G3 level your child takes in each subject.
