What are New Jersey's homeschool requirements?
New Jersey is one of the least regulated states for homeschooling. There is no registration, no notification to the district, and no required testing. Under state law, parents must provide an education that is equivalent to what is offered in public schools, covering subjects such as English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health, and physical education. There is no mandated curriculum and no portfolio review. Many families still choose to keep simple records of what they teach and the work their child produces, partly for their own planning and partly in case the district ever asks. Tutoring fits neatly inside that framework. Your tutor doesn't replace your role as the parent-educator and doesn't issue grades or transcripts. What they do is provide direct, expert instruction in the subjects you've chosen and, if it's helpful, send a short progress note after each session that you can keep in your own records.

How does 1-on-1 homeschool tutoring with Tutero actually work?
Every Tutero lesson is 1-on-1 with a tutor matched to your child's grade, subject, and learning style. We start with a short conversation about where your child is, what's working in your homeschool, and where they're getting stuck. From there, your tutor builds a plan that complements the curriculum you're already using at home, rather than replacing it. Sessions run online over video, so you can fit them around co-ops, museum days in New York City or Philadelphia, and the rest of your week. Many of our New Jersey families book two or three sessions a week in core subjects like math, reading, and writing, and add one-off sessions for a science fair project, AP exam preparation, or a chapter that just isn't clicking. You stay in control of the pace, the subjects, and how often you book.
Which subjects and grade levels does Tutero cover in New Jersey?
Tutero supports homeschoolers across Grade K-12 in New Jersey, with tutors for every core subject: math, reading, writing, English, science, history, world languages, and the full AP slate in high school. We work alongside the curriculum you're already using, whether that's a classical program, a charter umbrella, a religious program, an online provider, or a mix you've assembled yourself. For early grades, lessons focus on phonics, number sense, and the steady reading and writing reps that build confidence. For middle and high school, we go deeper on conceptual understanding, writing craft, and exam preparation, including AP exams, the SAT, the ACT, and selective-college prep for families with their eye on competitive in-state schools like Rutgers, Princeton, NJIT, or the wider Ivy League and Ivy-plus.
Do New Jersey homeschoolers need to take the NJSLA?
No. The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) are required for students enrolled in public schools, not for homeschoolers. As a homeschool family in New Jersey, you are not required to sit your child for state testing of any kind. That said, some families like to use a standardised test once a year as their own check-in on how the year went, and some students opt into AP exams, the SAT, or the ACT in high school for college admissions. If you'd like to use NJSLA-style materials as a benchmark, or prepare for AP, SAT, or ACT exams, your tutor can build a focused plan in the run-up. We won't push testing on families who don't want it; the point is to give you the option, not the obligation.
Can Tutero help with AP exams and Ivy-prep in New Jersey?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons New Jersey families come to us in the high school years. We have tutors who specialise in the AP slate, including AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP US History, AP English Language and Literature, AP Computer Science, and the AP languages. We also support SAT and ACT preparation, the SAT subject-style content review some selective programs still ask for, and the broader admissions arc that goes with applying to selective US universities. For families homeschooling specifically because they want to free up time for serious academic depth, music, sport, or research, we can structure tutoring around those bigger goals rather than just the next chapter.
