How school works in Queensland, from NAPLAN to the QCE, and when tutoring helps most.
The QCE is run by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). Students need 20 credits, including set standards in literacy and numeracy, usually earned across Years 11 and 12. General subjects are academic and end with an external exam. Applied subjects are practical and assessed by the school.
In Units 3 and 4 of a General subject, the school sets three internal assessments and QCAA sets one external exam. The exam is worth 25% in most subjects and 50% in maths and sciences. QTAC calculates the ATAR from the best five General subjects, or four plus one Applied subject or Certificate III.
Queensland schools run four terms. NAPLAN is sat in March in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and results are reported in four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support. That gives a clear read on where your child sits against the national standard.
Students choose QCE subjects in Year 10, often guided by Year 10 results. Pick subjects your child can do well in, then check prerequisites for the university courses they are considering. For an ATAR, at least four should be General subjects. Applied subjects suit practical learners and still count toward the QCE.
Most families start when a subject begins to feel hard, rather than the week before a test. In primary school that is often reading, spelling or times tables. In high school it is usually Year 7, when algebra and essay writing arrive, or Year 10, before senior course choices.
In Year 12 the internal assessments come first. Through Terms 1 to 3, lessons work on drafts, checkpoints and exam-style practice, since internal results make up most of the final mark in many subjects. In Term 4, lessons move to past external exams under timed conditions.
Tutero matches your child, ages 5-18, with a 1-on-1 tutor who knows the Queensland curriculum and the QCE. Brisbane families keep the same tutor at the same time each week, lessons start from your child’s own school work, and you get a short report after every lesson. A qualified teacher is from A$75 an hour.

My son's grade has gone from D to now B in Maths. If you are second-guessing, you won't regret it. Gabby is an amazing tutor. Give them a go & share the love with your friends and families who are finding it tough to help their child in never-ending exams & assignments.

Our tutor was beyond outstanding, She went over and above with her time and availability, the way she related with to my 16yo and motivated her was excellent. Thank you for your help, couldn't have asked for a better result.

They answered my enquiry on a weekend within half an hour which I did not expect. The others I contacted at the same time, replied the following week. My nephew is learning with Andy and the great plus about Andy is he finished high school a few years ago and is now at Uni. The price is much more affordable my nephew has improved so much considering he has slight autism. Tutero, Joey and his team have proven very caring and considerate. Thank you Tutero.

My daughter’s tutor Sera has honestly been amazing. The connection was instant and Sera is so supportive and understanding. To receive a phone call from my daughter at school so happy after her maths class that she understood what was being taught was definitely so great to receive. Thank you.

Not only was the process made really simple and engaging, but Tutero also provided me a personalised page where I can track my sessions, organise tutors in different subjects if need be and a record of the work I needed to follow up on. If you need a tutor, but don't want all the logistical stress involved with tracking one down, I strongly recommend Tutero!

My daughter has been having weekly sessions this term and the progress is definitely noticeable. Her tutor comes to each session prepared and provides amazing, honest feedback after each one. The communication is fantastic and we are very impressed overall. This has been the best solution for us as a busy family and I would definitely recommend our tutor to anyone who asks.
