Emma was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia when she was young, and more recently with ADHD. Her mom, Jill, chose Tutero because she read that we were equipped to support children with ADHD. Emma works with the same teacher, Lori, every week. Over time they have built a real bond: with Lori, Emma is focused, gets the encouragement she needs, and never asks to skip a lesson. Lori is part of Emma’s week, not a quick fix, and Jill sees the results.
“She really likes Lori, they’ve formed a bond.”

“She never says she doesn’t want tutoring, she always wants to.”

If it is UA or PEP, yes. Families on UA or PEP pay $0 out of pocket, with nothing to pay upfront. Not sure which scholarship your child has? It is shown at the top of their EMA account.
Their teacher gets to know them. One hour, 1-on-1, working on what your child is learning right now. The teacher sees what is solid and where the gaps are, with any IEP goals in mind. Afterwards you get a written report and a plan in the parent app.
No. You tell us once. Share the IEP on your first call and its goals and accommodations go into the plan before lesson one. Your child keeps the same teacher every week, so nobody has to start over.
Straight answers from 310,000+ lessons.

Usually a gap, not ability. Most subjects build on themselves: a gap in fractions in 5th grade becomes an algebra problem in 8th grade. Most students who say they hate a subject are missing two or three specific ideas. The first lesson finds them.
A diagnosis, then a plan. One hour, 1-on-1, working through what your child is learning right now. The tutor watches how they approach a problem and maps what is solid and what is not. Afterwards a written report and a plan land in the parent app.
Confidence first, grades next. Most parents see confidence change first, then grades at the next test or report card. One lesson a week through the semester, with a check-in from your account manager.

How much does a dyslexia tutor cost?
Understood says specialist dyslexia tutors often charge US$40 to US$125 an hour, and more in big cities. Tutero lessons start from US$45 an hour, the same rate at every grade. You pay after each lesson, with no contracts and no sign-up fee. Some families use scholarship or HSA funds to pay for lessons.
Does my child need a dyslexia diagnosis to start tutoring?
No. Tell us what you are seeing, such as slow reading, guessing at words or spelling that doesn't stick, and we match your child with a teacher experienced with dyslexia. If you think your child may have dyslexia, ask the school for an evaluation in writing. Tutoring can start while you wait.
Do your teachers use Orton-Gillingham?
We don't describe our teachers as Orton-Gillingham or Wilson certified. They are certified teachers experienced with dyslexia, and they teach sounds and spelling patterns directly and in order, with plenty of review, which are the principles those methods share. If your child's IEP names a specific program or a certified practitioner, tell us on the first call and we will be straight with you about whether we are the right fit.
Does online tutoring work for kids with dyslexia?
It can. Understood says online tutoring done right can be just as helpful as meeting in person. Lessons are live, so the teacher hears every sound and corrects it straight away, and the shared whiteboard lets your child build and mark up words on screen. Younger children may need a parent nearby for the first few lessons.
How many tutoring sessions a week does a child with dyslexia need?
Most one-on-one programs recommend two or three 60-minute sessions a week, according to Understood, and the International Dyslexia Association suggests at least two. More practice usually means faster progress, but a schedule your family can keep for months matters more than an ambitious one you can't sustain.
Will the teacher work with my child's IEP or 504 plan?
Yes. Share the plan on your first call and your child's teacher works alongside it. Tutoring adds practice and one-on-one time; it doesn't replace the support your child's school provides under the plan.
Written by a former special-education teacher on Tutero's Learning Support team.
Every lesson is live, 1-on-1 and online, with the same teacher each week. Your child's teacher plans each hour from what your child is working on at school and what they saw in the last lesson, so the order changes from week to week. Most hours include these parts.
After every lesson, your child's teacher writes a lesson report: what you covered, what stuck and what comes next. Every report stays in the parent app, so you can see the weeks add up.
The short version, for parents comparing options.
Your child is taught by a certified teacher experienced with dyslexia. We don't describe our teachers as Orton-Gillingham or Wilson certified. When we match, we look for experience teaching children who find reading and spelling hard, and a manner that suits your child.
Matching starts with a call with your account manager. They ask about your child's grade, what reading and spelling look like at home and at school, what has and hasn't helped before, any evaluation, IEP or 504 plan, and what your child enjoys. You don't need a diagnosis. Our teachers teach; they don't diagnose.
Your account manager then chooses a teacher using our matching filter for learning needs, alongside subject, grade, your schedule and personality. Before the first lesson, the teacher gets a full brief about your child and emails you to introduce themselves, so your child doesn't start with a stranger who knows nothing about them.
If your child's school uses a particular reading program, tell us. Your child's teacher can plan around what school is teaching so the two support each other. And if the fit isn't right, your account manager finds another teacher, without you having to explain your child all over again.
Tutoring helps most when three things are true: reading and spelling are taught directly and in order, lessons happen often, and your child works with the same person long enough to trust them. Children with dyslexia usually need much more practice than their classmates before a pattern becomes automatic, and one-on-one time is where they get it.
How often. Understood, the US nonprofit for learning differences, says most one-on-one programs recommend 60-minute sessions two or three times a week. The International Dyslexia Association suggests at least two. A schedule your family can keep for months matters more than an ambitious one that lasts three weeks.
How long. Months, not weeks. Parents often notice confidence first: less dread at homework time, more willingness to try. Reading speed and spelling take longer, and the International Dyslexia Association says reaching independence can take two to three years or more. Dyslexia doesn't go away, and a good teacher won't pretend it will. What changes is how much effort reading takes.
When tutoring isn't the whole answer. If your child hasn't been evaluated, ask the school in writing. Public school evaluations are free, and a tutor can't diagnose dyslexia or write an IEP. Tutoring can start while you wait.
"It makes me feel like you understand the struggle of education and having a disability, and what accommodations are. I don't have to explain that."
Dorothy Drummond, mom and social worker, Florida. Recorded interview, shared with permission.
"It's great to hear how chatty and comfortable she is with Emily. Her lesson reports are showing she is improving in her reading which is fantastic."
